The relationship between Kojiro and Jisai, a short thread:

This dynamic is one of the most nuanced I’ve ever seen. It’s a fantastic commentary on parental pedagogy, and in this case, the raising of a disabled child.

I find it beautiful how Jisai is a man that lost his purpose +
in life, and finds new purpose in raising Kojiro which he dedicates himself to. Despite his flawed approach in raising Kojiro, he had the best in mind for him. He was a brilliant father, but his methods of teaching were controlling and overprotective... though for good reason +
considering Kojiro’s disability.

Bearing in mind that Vagabond is set in Feudal Japan, a setting where the life of a samurai is something that inspires and rouses people, I’m sure Jisai would not have minded, if not encouraged Kojiro to pursue that life, but due to Kojiro’s +
disability, Jisai assumed that life was impossible for him and would lead to certain death. It’s only right for a parent to be overprotective of their child when their well-being is in mind.

However, as we know, Jisai was mistaken. Kojiro DID have the potential to reach +
incredible heights, and Jisai could’ve unlocked that potential had he put some faith in Kojiro and utilised different methods of parenting.

Ito Ittosai understands this, and attempts to unleash that very potential, but just understanding that Kojiro had potential doesn’t make +
you a good father. Ito had the only thing Jisai lacked, faith in Kojiro, but everything else that constitutes a good parent was completely lost on him, which is why Ito could not replace Jisai.

Nonetheless, the main takeaway from their dynamic is that Jisai thought it his duty +
to protect Kojiro from a world he perceived to be far too dangerous for a deaf child. What he didn’t appreciate was Kojiro’s abilities to adapt and, in some respects, use his disability to his advantage. And that’s exactly what Kojiro does.

I love both Kojiro & Jisai’s dynamic +
as well as the Kojiro arc itself very much, and this is the main reasons why.

There are lessons to be learnt from Vagabond, and in this particular case, Inoue reflects on different parenting methods, particularly for a child with disabilities, which can understandably +
prove to be a very difficult task.

A parent should always have faith in their child’s ability to adapt and overcome, even if they think they have their best interests in mind, it is their job to utilise the most effective and efficient methods of teaching.
