/There is a reason that Republicans keep referring to January 6th as a riot. A riot is usually a spontaneous explosion of violence. To call what happened at the Capitol a riot makes it seem like it was spontaneous. If it was spontaneous then it can't be their fault.
/This was not a spontaneous event. It was planned. There were emails and speeches leading up to it. The President promised that January 6th "would be wild" weeks before. People arrived from out of town with baseball bats, body armor, Flex-Cuffs, ...
/...gas masks, walkie talkies with inner ear buds, bear spray, helmets, batons and climbing equipment. You don't drive or fly in from another state with all of that stuff "spontaneously". You plan it. You plan to use it.
/The organizers of the rally, like Ali Alexander, had been saying that they were going to "1776" their opponents. Rep Lauren Boebert tweeted 1776 the morning of the attack. Ted Cruz told the attackers they were like the Patriots at Valley Forge.
/All of this was intended to feeling for violent revolution. In context theses are references violent overthrow of the Goverment. "1776" was their code to attack.
/There were definitely people in there who got caught up in the moment. But the speeches, emails, and TV appearances from Republicans leading up to that day brought the attackers in to DC. The speeches given that day sent them directly to the Capitol.
/This was not a riot. It was an insurrection. Don't let anyone try to change that.
