We’re all missing live music so here is the best thing that has ever happened at a function gig:
I was in a string quartet that did a fun interactive show in addition to the usual background music. We did a lot of weddings. Generally we’d provide ceremony music, background music during dinner, and then do the fun set later when everyone had had a few drinks
This wedding gig was a good one. The clients were absolutely lovely, everyone was enjoying the music, staff were attentive at keeping us in soft drinks all afternoon, and we were fed some delicious hog roast during our break.
About the hog roast: venue was Snape Maltings, which backs on to open fields. Open fields where people walk their dogs. Dogs are known to enjoy hog roasts.
I was standing up telling a few jokes and announcing the next piece when it happened. A flash of grey in my peripheral vision, followed by distant yelling. I stopped mid-sentence. Nobody was paying attention to me any more anyway.
Rapidly gaining on us was an enormous German shepherd, and he was running for that hog roast as if it was the last hog roast on earth. Sprinting behind, yelling his head off, was his furious owner, who stood literally no chance of catching up. This was a dog on a mission.
It was one of those moments that almost happens in slow motion. Wedding guests scattered as this giant dog fully dived across the patio, landing on the hog roast and proceeding to absolutely decimate it. Nobody could have stopped him. He was the happiest dog on earth.
Meanwhile his owner was still running and screaming like a British Yosemite Sam. The dog had a good 30 second head start at the hog roast before the furious man finally caught up and hauled him away. Bad dog!
Shortly after this, my colleague played an amazing solo. I invited the guests to vote on who had been more entertaining, him or the dog. The dog won by a landslide.
