Today at 10:30 AM PT: Washington Privacy Act ( #WaPA 3.0) has its first hearing in #waleg. I'll be there! https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5062&Initiative=false&Year=2021
Not sure about this legislative background in the #WaPA memo though: http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2021-22/Pdf/Bill%20Reports/Senate/5062%20SBA%20ENET%2021.pdf?q=20210114085603
As we get ready for #WaPA 3.0 to kick-off, figured I'd take a trip down memory lane. It was EXACTLY two years ago when I did a quick analysis of the first iteration of this bill, while sitting in a college cafeteria in Brooklyn. Here's my first blog post: https://cdt.org/insights/the-washington-privacy-act-raises-important-considerations-for-comprehensive-privacy-proposals/
Then last year, when people could travel, I got to go to Olympia a few times to meet with lawmakers and push for improvements in #WaPA 2.0 (and hang out with @mxmahoney5):
And cross paths with @jevanhutson at a parking lot pay machine so very early in the morning. What fun awaits us this year?
. @Reuvencarlyle wrapping up his introduction, hopes lawmakers will "gain an appreciation for not just the complexity but the importance of these [privacy] rights" in #WaPA. Here we go! I'll be flagging testimony that's new, interesting, or curious.
Here we go! @InternetAssn wants a "clearer" definition of "targeted advertising" and will be providing language to "clarify" this. #adtech
The @BobFergusonAG's Office is "very encouraged" by improvements to #WaPA 3.0, appreciates the reasoning behind the bill's right to cure provision but does not believe this should go into perpetuity and calls for a sunset.
And @jdp23 is also doing a good thread on #WaPA 3.0: https://twitter.com/jdp23/status/1349782928016826368
