In 2003, far-right activist David Horowitz met with Colorado GOP lawmakers to get a bill called the Academic Bill of Rights introduced in #coleg the following year. Horowitz organized Republicans on college campuses to falsely allege discrimination. #CUBoulder #copolitics

ABOR was met with a wave of opposition from students and faculty who correctly saw it as an assault on academic integrity by usual-suspect conservatives. The bill was defeated and the college conservative witch hunt against local professors subsided. #CUBoulder #copolitics #coleg

But the failure of ABOR was not the end of the "conservative affirmative action" movement in Colorado. Bruce Benson, former GOP candidate for governor and major GOP donor, wanted to be President of CU and persuaded a Democratic governor to nominate him. #CUBoulder #copolitics

At the time, CU's financial problems were major headlines and Benson promised to right the ship. But in "Ben$on's" back pocket he another agenda: "ideological diversity on campus." Benson spoke constantly about the need for "conservative viewpoints." #CUBoulder #copolitics #coleg

The result was the @BensonCenter, an institution set up solely to provide a haven for what Benson believed was a persecuted ideology--American conservative politics.

But the real result is critical thinking and academic rigor were subverted at #CUBoulder. #copolitics #coleg

The @BensonCenter has debased the academic integrity of #CUBoulder from the start. Eastman is just the latest "Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought" to disgrace the entire institution with blathering nonsense. Benson's legacy is a failure and it must go. #copolitics #coleg
