After last week's discussion on influencer activism, I'm thinking way more carefully about the labels I ascribe to people
Really do think there should be more care taken before calling someone an 'activist' or doing 'slaaaaay queen' rhetoric around them, especially if they're a marginalised person who has been politicised just because they have opinions online
Why is it not legitimate for someone like a PoC to just be, say a writer or an academic who thinks and analyses, sometimes in public, without that becoming 'activism'? It's a social good but why does it have to be 'activism'? Activism is a very heavy burden to bear!
These labels also get stuck on anyone with a marginalised gender identity or sexual orientation. Some, of course, lean into it but it's often the thinkers who really are trying to reject these automatic descriptors who get saddled with them most
