1. What sexual assault is to body, spiritual abuse is to the soul. Spiritual abuse is an assault of a soul, the ravishing of a person’s spirit, a strangling of an image bearers light. When the church truly grasps what spiritual abuse is it’ll tear its garments & fall on its face.
2. The church doesn’t take spiritual abuse seriously or fully grasp what it is; because if it did we would see such profound mourning and action against it. It wouldn’t be a side issue or mission, it would be THE subject. God shut down church growth to deal w/ a couple of liars.
3. If the church truly grasped what spiritual abuse is and its impact, we’d reorient focus to cleansing ourselves instead of spreading the contamination. Again, God was willing to pause growth to cleave deception from the body (Ananias & Sapphira), we move “business as usual”.
4. Of course I am not “anti-missions”. By no means. I do, however, believe that our priorities towards going out rather than cleansing within speaks to broader priorities. If missions was truly about loving souls, we’d want to ensure we don’t spread a pandemic of spiritual abuse.
5. Where’s the conferences on Soul Care & spiritual power dynamics? The seminars & even seminary classes that deal with pastoral power and its abuses? Where are the conversations revolving around ecclesiology that discuss ways church cultures can aid or enable spiritual abuse?
