To all the rabbinical and cantorial students starting the placement process, this is a reminder that it will all work out and you’ll find the right job for you. A congregation saying no isn’t a judgement of your worth as almost clergy—it’s that you aren’t right for them.
Also, the night after I submitted my resume to the school to send to congregations (these were the old days with paper and sending documents in the mail), a copy was sitting out when I had a few friends over.
She looked at it. And looked at me. And said, “you know this says asses and not assess, right?”
A panicked phone call to the dean of students and an early morning trip down to school the next morning to give her a new copy before they went in the mail, and it all worked out.
And it’s now a great story to tell. Also the one from another year about showing up to an interview in a new suit, with the plastic thing they put on clothing so you don’t steal it still on because the store forgot to remove it.
Don’t forget to laugh. Don’t forget to breathe. And know that you are awesome.
Tagging @HUCJIR and @ReformRabbis because that’s my movement, but this is true for everyone else, too.
