What is the solution to social media censorship?

I'm not sure, but I am sure some entrepreneurs will figure it out now that the demand is finally significant.

And here are a couple ideas I think might be part of the solution.

...

A new business model:

Right now ads drive the revenue for social media. This creates a lot of adversarial relationships between users and "customers" (advertisers). And the customer wins.

Censorship is one of those places. If @CocaCola doesn't want their ad

...
3/

Next to my rant about censorship or how free market insurance would destroy the corrupt state then my rant will be vaporized before the ad because the ad pays for the system.

So we probably need the customer to be the user. A monthly subscription is one way to do this.

...
4/

Another option is to find a way to make users pay as they get additional value. My fav idea here is that every like sends the author a few sats and the service gets to keep 10%.

...
5/

Unfortunately @netflix is pretty strong evidence that even then the "customer" is not the user. Very few users want transgender content to be front and center when they look for a movie with their kids. So who is the customer of netflix?

...
6/

The only customer that matters to any US corporation is the state. They print the money, they buy the bonds, and they provide a million other favors when their face shines upon you and a million attacks when you displease them.

...
7/

So it is very possible that ending the fed is a prerequisite to having a decent social media platform. For those that have read Hans Hermann Hoppe this is not a shock as the state always tries to monopolize communication and media.

So #bitcoin fixes this.

...
8/

But let's assume that gets fixed on schedule and we align the "customer" and the "user" in one.

What else might help make social media work?

...
9/

Similar to the (flawed) concept of sea steading social media should allow users to pickup and leave as easily as possible. If not to bring their friends (that stay behind) at least all of their previous posts, likes, etc.

...
10/

Also users should be able to post in many places at once and like content in many places at once and friend/follow people in many places at once.

This requires a protocol that is more popular than any particular service. Services compete based on features not access

...
11/

This is how browsers or email clients work. The fundamental features around access to content are handled at the protocol level and the "client apps" are free to experiment with user experiences that are eventually adopted as standards into the protocol when needed.

...
12/

But none of these changes are likely to happen quickly and may even require adoption of bitcoin as global money (to make the user the actual customer)

So what should we do in the meantime?

...
13/

We should keep doing what we are doing - muddle through as best we can. In the last few years Twitter has served us very well. The amount of bitcoin education and liberty education that has happened here is probably more than all other platforms combined.

...
14/

That doesn't mean we should stay, but it does mean that we can get a lot of good work done with dull tools when needed. Twitter is like a dull electric circular saw - it sucks, but it is a whole lot better than a sharp handsaw and that's all we had a few years ago.

...
15/

So let's experiment to see if we can find something more effective, but at the same time recognize it might not exist yet and that is OK.

We are making a ton of progress on the problem. Even the widespread panic everyone feels

...
16/

Is massive progress we couldn't have realistically expected a couple years ago.

So don't despair when we are making big wins on almost every front. Many of the worst things are the death rattles of the old system that was much worse.

...
17/

Personally I am going to experiment with Telegram, Clubhouse, more podcast appearances, IRC and a few other things, but most importantly I'm going to #hodl and keep working on #bitcoin projects.
