So I've done some spreadsheet work while working out which grants we're waiting on. There's a really good tweet from @brigidjones that explains this better, I'll RT when I find it. Basically, every time the gov changes the tier, it creates a new grant scheme, which makes it 1/
incredibly difficult for @BhamCityCouncil to issue, as we've been in every Tier, and 5 grant schemes. It also makes it difficult for businesses to know how much we're eligible for and when to expect it, and whether it's pro-rata. 2/
It's also unclear as to how long "one-off" grants are expected to last and whether we are in a worse situation than the first lockdown. So, that's what I've done the maths on. Here we go. 3/
Under the first lockdown there were only one-off grants:
- £10k for businesses with rateable values of up to £15k
- £25k for businesses with RVs between £15-51k
These were expected to last between 21st March and 8th July (although there was no end date when grants were issued) 4/
Under this new lockdown (3.0 or whatever) we can get:
- £4k for businesses with RV up to £15k + £1134 a month
- £6k for businesses with RV up to £51k + £2k a month
- £9k for businesses with RV beyond £51k + £3k a month

So lets assume an end date of 1st May... 5/
Assuming pubs open 1st May (which is highly ambitious) lockdown 3 will have been 116 days, (compared to lockdown 1 of 110). So we can add up all the grants to calculate the monthly average over each lockdown.
So it's clear that this round of grants offers far less than the first round. Pubs with a rateable value under £15k are nearly £500 PER MONTH worse off this time around. Pubs between £15-51k are on average nearly £3k a month worse off than the original lockdown support. 7/
So first conclusion -
The grants on offer during lockdown 3 are significantly less than lockdown 1, particularly for those in the £15k-51k rateable value. @HospoUnion @UKHospKate @UKHofficial However; @liambyrnemp , @BrumLeader , @andy4wm - for Birmingham it's even worse... 8/
Hospitality in Birmingham has been in lockdown since Nov 5th. Assuming the same end date (May 1st) as the rest of the UK, we'll have been in hosp-lockdown for 177 days or 6.3 months. While monthly grants will run alongside this, the average monthly income is a lot less
So, conclusion 2 ...
Birmingham hospitality businesses will be worse off than most of the UK, in terms of grant income per month during lockdown 3. This is because we have been in lockdown for substantially longer. In our case, this is a difference of nearly £3500 a month. 10/
Overall?
- Lockdown 3 govt support is far less than lockdown 1.
- Esp in Birmingham and places that locked-down earlier.
- Govt changing tiers makes it difficult for councils to issue grants.
- What are we going to do?
