The development of Eren and Mikasa relationship From~ I’m not your brother nor your child to What am I to you? Part 3
1. Firstly, I would like to talk about the change in demeanour in Eren, as we can see in the first parts of the story, where Eren acts quite aggressive towards Mikasa, but in season 3 he may see Mikasa in a different light.
2. In the first instance, we see Mikasa still looking for after Eren, by Eren also shows some care towards Mikasa,as he told Mikasa to rest from her titan injuries. This implies Eren showing care towards Mikasa, for the first time.
3. When, Mikasa loses Eren again to Kneny Ackerman and Rod Reiss, Hange explains why they want Eren. This almost makes Mikasa infuriated, as she was about to go on a rampage, but Levi stopped her. In that moment, Mikasa started to trust Eren and that he would be fine.
4. In the end, Mikasa finally gets Eren back, but Eren struggles to wake up, until he hears Mikasa’s voice calling out towards him, then Eren finally wakes up. We can infer that the author uses the reoccurring theme, that Mikasa will wake up Eren, from his dreams.
5. Later on, we see that Eren is ready for himself to be eaten by Rod Reiss titan, but Mikasa portrays a sense of discomfort, as she wouldn’t let that happen. Furthermore, Mikasa reiterates “you can’t”, it shows Mikasa just wants to be by his side and cares for Eren deeply.
6. There’s a shift in focus where the panel was on Historia, and where she almost really intended to eat Eren and yams showed her panel, as soon as Historia said it, the shift in focus goes to Mikasa ,where it is implied that Mikasa won’t ever do that to Eren.
7. Also, at this point Eren feels useless, as everyone is working extra hard, his friends and Mikasa, and that he was concerning everyone and endangering them.
8. Eventually, Eren punches himself to pull himself out of his doubts as he says “Beating the shit out of a useless brat”. But Mikasa quickly calmed him down. Mikasa grabbed his hands as he was unable to hit himself.
9. Later on, we see Eren spacing out again, then Mikasa pulls him out and tells him to eat his meal. Rather than brush her off like he used to, he apologised and accepted her care.
10. In addition, Jean implies how Mikasa would always save Eren whenever he’s in danger, which he didn’t deny because, he knew himself that Jean was right.
11. Eventually, Eren admits his jealousy, as he couldn’t be as strong as Mikasa or Captain Levi, but in this moment Eren realises everyone has flaws, not everything can be done by yourself. We can infer that Mikasa just wants everything to go back to normal, from their childhood.
12. Another thing is to consider, he may not realised it yet about his own feelings, but his action towards Mikasa drastically changed throughout Season 1 and 2. He was softer and nicer towards her as he knows that she cared for him.
13. He would often apologise to Mikasa, for issues she has to deal with because of Eren. Eren has accepted Mikasa protection and care for him, which connotes Mikasa deep feelings for Eren, as she would do anything to protect him.
14. Whenever, Eren thinks about home, the one thing that always be present along with his parents, Carla and Grisha, is always Mikasa, the author uses the reference, to suggest that Mikasa was always apart of his home and his life.
15. Furthermore, Eren also looks back at Mikasa, as she is the only home Eren has left, which is the driving force of his motivation and desire, to work harder and become better. As, Eren knows Mikasa is the home he would like to return to everyday.
16. Even after Eren’s transformation to seal the breach , Mikasa would help Eren and would even offer him the cloak, in order to stay hidden. Then, Eren accepts her cloak and shows appreciation towards Mikasa. It portrays the change in Eren’s attitude , towards Mikasa.
17. Also, even when Eren doubts himself and his abilities, Mikasa always reassures him that he should believe in himself and trust his own judgement.
18. After the battle in Shiganshina, Eren and Mikasa head towards their home, where they see memories of the their house and their child self running towards the house. Also, they also see memories of their loved ones that they cherished, who have died.
19. Furthermore, it shows how much Eren and Mikasa have developed throughout the years. Also, it shows that they will always be with each other no matter the cost.
20. As soon as they get in the basement, they find the book, which withheld secrets about the titans. Eren is hesitant on opening the book, but Mikasa puts her hand on Eren’s, to comfort him, in which Eren has a surprised look at Mikasa.
21. This is the first time Eren looks at Mikasa in this specific way. Mikasa looks back at Eren with a sharp look to reassure him. From this, we can infer that Mikasa will always be with Eren on this journey, and be by his side no matter the cost, in which Eren realises.
22. Eventually, Eren unlocks his father memories, where he realises about how titan shifters work and how long each titan shifter can live, until they die from the curse of Ymir. Also, he tells Armin and Mikasa, that he has 8 years left to live.
23. But, Mikasa denies the feeling of losing Eren again, due to the information, Mikasa wants to find another way of saving Eren from the curse. Mikasa even says the “information is wrong”, “it’s not true”, to portray her discomfort and depression she is feeling.
24. Furthermore, Mikasa doesn’t want Eren to leave her side ever, Eren even questions that Mikasa lost weight during their time in the cell, this is due to the fact Mikasa couldn’t stop thinking about Eren’s death, and how she could save him from his fate.
