It's getting hard to keep up with all the vaccine-related news, so I tried summarizing key developments (with a focus on European supplies) from just the past week:
1, Very good news: On Jan 11, @BioNTech_Group shared that it boosted the production target for #Comirnaty from 1.3 billion to 2 billion doses for 2021. The next day it announced a partnership with @baxter_intl meaning the potential addition of another factory in Germany.
2, Also very good news: This could mean people not only don't get sick, but also don't get infected. This is preliminary data, of course, and we need to wait for 2nd doses anyway, but it's really-really encouraging so far. https://twitter.com/Birdyword/status/1349073493330165765
3, Cautiously optimistic news: According to also preliminary data, #Comirnaty appears to work against the new, more contagious coronavirus variants as well. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.01.07.425740v1
4, Important: @AstraZeneca submitted its application for conditional authorisation of its #COVID19Vaccine to @EMA_News. Decision expected on Jan 29
third vaccine should be available in Europe as of February. Wld be nice to see final efficacy data soon. https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/ema-receives-application-conditional-marketing-authorisation-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca

5, Mixed bag: J&J phase 3 data might be available in late Jan
move to approval in Feb
we could have 4 vaccines by March
BUT media reports suggest J&J is behind production schedule and might not catch up until the end of April. https://www.jnj.com/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-interim-phase-1-2a-data-published-in-new-england-journal-of-medicine

5, Predictibly disappointing: Moderna started delivering to Europe, but the shipments are miniscule. (e.g. first shipment to Germany was 60k doses). The company has warned exacly about this when mid-November the EU still had no signed deal w them.
6, Surprisingly disappointing: Sinovac's vaccine seems much lower efficacy (barely over 50%) than previously suggested. EU countries haven't ordered any Chinese vaccines but for the rest of the world its crucial that they work. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-55642648
7, News to keep an eye on: the other German mRNA producer, CureVac partnered with pharma giant @BayerPharma. The EU has a huge contract with Curevac, so let's hope they'll eventually succeed.

https://www.curevac.com/en/2021/01/07/curevac-and-bayer-join-forces-on-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-cvncov/
8, Curious: Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin discussed the possibility of Germany helping out with the production of Sputnik V. It's all subject to the vaccine's authorization by @EMA_News, which in turn is dependent on Gamaleya filing transparent data. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/01/05/putin-germanys-merkel-discuss-joint-coronavirus-vaccine-production-a72544
10, Even more curious: Hungary wants to buy Sinopharm's vaccine (BBIBP-CorV) in large quantities. What "practically made an agreement” means, how the
authority can validate data from Bahrain, UAE etc, what the price is, etc all remains unclear. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-vaccines-hungary/hungary-has-reached-deal-with-sinopharm-on-vaccine-purchase-pm-aide-idUSKBN29J13A

10, Bonus good news: mRNA vaccines are poised to revolutionize medicine beyond the vaccines developed for the ongoing global health emergency. It's incredibly exciting and hopeful news for so many struggling with terrible chronic diseases. https://multiplesclerosisnewstoday.com/news-posts/2021/01/11/biontech-vaccine-halts-ms-progression-without-immune-suppression-mouse-model-study/
Where does this all leave us? Europe will soon have a "second vaccine wave" w potentially 4-5 vaccines available by March
But are we going to be able to up our game?
Will the personnel be in place?
Are we preparing for higher gear or will just keep trying to catch up?

. @MacaesBruno
is why I am somewaht more optimistic about supply and worried about how it’ll be handled
