(Let's also not overlook the irony of rightists complain about being "colonized.")
But there's actually cause for optimism after reading this article, because the author is genuinely freaked out about "leftist educators" winning school election board races, which is EXACTLY the way the right built and wielded power in the late 20th century.

And he knows it.
He's also just a miserable bastard who's angry that his own Republican mayor has tried to do something constructive about the opioid crisis.
All of which raises another point. The author, Mark Pulliam, who is so goddamn angry that the leftists have come to HIS small quiet community of Maryville, TN, is not actually FROM Maryville, TN.

He relocated from Austin, Texas by his own admission.
So, basically, he's pissed off that the Nashville suburb he moved to doesn't live up to his expectations about it being a right-wing utopia.
A quick Google search shows that Pulliam is a corporate lawyer, Federalist Society member, and already relocated from California to Texas to escape the rising tide of... leftism on the West Coast.
Now, I'm just a simple lefty transplant in the foothills on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains, but it strikes me this history is relevant when big ol' Corporate Lawyer Man comes to a new town and starts whining about how homeless people use the local library.
