What people seem unwilling to understand is that somebody, at some point, is going to have to draw a line under All Of This, and say "enough".

The challenge is that doing so is seen as weak. Capitulation. Acquiescence.

And in today's hyper-partisan, politically-charged world, anything that looks like weakness almost instantly becomes poison.

But there is a way forward, and it starts with truth. Which is what Mandela understood so clearly.

The only path for South Africa to emerge from the nightmare of apartheid was to form a truth and reconciliation committee.

First: truth.

Then: reconciliation.

So long as the R's continue to peddle fabulist conspiracy theories and outrageous lies (and, BTW, to continue to defend the indefensible, there can be no reconciliation. And so long as the D's conflate all who oppose them with White Supremacy and Nazism...

... all our elected officials will give us is this corrosive cycle of blame, victimhood, and political revenge.

And the biggest challenge, I think, is that the mantra of victimhood has become the most powerful political lever in today's public square.

But I don't know how to unwind victimhood, particularly as it is primarily an emotional response to a perceived reality. We all need therapy to sort this out. But...how do you offer mass therapy to an entire country?

Truth. Reconciliation. One possible starting point.
