Short thread:
1/ #AlQaeda-linked Thabat Media has released 9 pages of charts summarizing #jihad operations across al-Qaeda branches during 2020. Alleged total = 6,999. Data accuracy can’t be verified, but relative areas of activity likely hold (For #Yemen as a benchmark, see end)
2/ Most active area of #alQaeda activity in 2020 by far (according to Thabat) was #Afghanistan (Khurasan, not to be confused with #Khorasan Group). East #Africa was 2nd, #Syria 3rd after big dip from March. #Yemen was 6th. Al-Qaeda allegedly killed 16,026 people & injured 10,046
3/ #AlQaeda jihadis are no longer tripping over each other in enthusiasm to blow themselves up. #Suicide ops are out of favour everywhere but #Afghanistan & East #Africa, where 72 and 32 “ #martyrdom” operations were undertaken respectively in 2020 (according to Thabat)
4/ Thabat's #Yemen data (68 ops) differs from formal #AQAP claims. It undercounts Jan-June & overcounts July-Dec. Possible explanations
-Weak AQAP comms fail to record all ops
-AQAP disowned some local splinters
-Distinguishing who is/isn’t AQAP is hard
-Thabat methods are sloppy
