Over 12 years ago, UK government committed to healthy seas by the end of 2020 – but currently less than 1% are protected.
A thread on why it’s important to ensure our ocean is healthy – for both people and planet.

A thread on why it’s important to ensure our ocean is healthy – for both people and planet.

In 2019, our seas failed to meet government standards on good environmental health against 11 out of 15 indicators, including those relating to birds, fish and seabed habitats.
We know how important healthy seas are.
They’re an unsung hero in the fight against #ClimateChange.
They have huge economic value.
They are essential for thriving ocean biodiversity.
Yet they’ve been neglected by our decision makers.

Yet they’ve been neglected by our decision makers.
That’s why we and @SkyZeroOfficial have created the #ValueOfRestoredSeas report. To show our leaders what the benefits are if they commit to what they’ve already promised.
Committing to restoring the UK ocean could contribute at least ÂŁ50 billion to the British economy annually.
On top of this, our ocean has the potential to create over 100,000 full time jobs, while helping fight the climate crisis.
On top of this, our ocean has the potential to create over 100,000 full time jobs, while helping fight the climate crisis.
We know how to make this happen. Together with @SkyZeroOffical, we’re calling for UK Government to:
Restore lost coastal ecosystems.
Protect a third of UK seas.
Make the seafood industry nature and climate positive.
Support net-zero climate action.

We need the next 10 years to be the turning point for our ocean, or we risk destroying it.
We know what we needs to be done to help our ocean recover - we now need action.
