“Everyone knows there are massive sustainability issues in the coffee sector.” Kaitlin Cordes, Col.Ctr on Sustnbl Dev, “We need to reflect on why after all of these years of working on sustainability... producers are in much the same position as they were in the previous crisis.”
On whether smallholders should increase volume, or diversify, “It’s an easy out to point to diversification rather than how coffee prices and how coffee js valued might need to change as well.”
On whether there is value in certifications, Sjoerd Panhuysen (Ethos Agriculture and author of the Barometer) says, “The big question is yes we have certification and all of these nice tools, but we also need buyers to take up these volumes.”
“It’s very interesting that for such a small increase in the cost of a cup of coffee ( $0.005, half of one US cent), that we could make a difference to the most vulnerable (coffee farmers).” Juan Antonio Rivas, SVP at Olam. He also says price stabilisation as a potential solution

On whether companies are meeting obligations around sustainability and transparency, while some companies are, “the sector itself has to raise the bar and companies need to challenge their peers on transparency and ensure that the whole sector is transparent.” Sjoerd Panhuysen
“We all want diversified sourcing opportunities, so it’s a collective responsibility [to make sure farmers have a living income].” On who should take responsibility for leading the transition for farmers to other income. Juan Antonio Rivas, Olam
“To what extent will the sector improve its performance in respect of the issues discussed today?” All panelists expect Significant improvement, despite the lack of distinct progress in the last 15 years. 60% of the audience said “Small Improvement”.
