The pursuit of perfection.

The perfect concept. The perfect render. The perfect artwork.

Take a break from the above for a moment.

What if I shared a story about an artist whose version of perfection is *imperfection*?

Let's visit @mchiama's world 👇
"I've always been into music and magic. The art part of my life has always been in my head.

When I started working, I was always thinking and writing down the artistic ideas I had to keep for later."

- @mchiama
Matt *worked*:
- Engineering school
- News channel (honing green screen and 3D techniques)
- Freelancing and digital advertising startups
- Ad agency lead motion designer (specializing in video games and in-game content)

He never stopped creating his own art.
Matt discovered Andreas @Wannerstedt.

"His work was impossible to recreate. To have the initial idea yes, but to have the perfect materials and light was like mission impossible.

I tried, I tried, I tried. I thought 'this might not be the right angle'." https://twitter.com/Wannerstedt/status/1341808331296563200
"The first time I opened Cinema 4G, I tried something. I was fully confident it would be perfect, and it failed.

Watching it fail and fail and fail again, it came to my mind *that was it.* I like to have a good laugh. June, 2018 I posted the first one." https://twitter.com/mchiama/status/1144192435096117248
The first what?

The F*CK series. Yes, you read that right.

@mchiama says: "You know all these perfectly looping 3D animations you see everywhere? Well this is not one of these. Satisfying animations are overrated".

Watch a few and you might agree.
Did @mchiama intend to f*ck it up?

To this day, people offer tips to help Matt fix his artwork, thinking he's still striving for perfection.

"If people think that, it means that the job is done."

Imperfect art still requires an intense process. Here are three Matt principles:
Selectivity.

@mchiama has a folder of 140 animations, but only 42 have seen the light of day.

"I really try to only post the ones I enjoy. It's easier to sell something to people that you really believe in."

This picture of his file is called "NeverUsedandNeverWill.png".
Constraint.

3 lunches or bust.

@mchiama applies the powerful principle of constraint to his work. If it can't be created via three consecutive and intensely focused lunch breaks (when Matt practices his personal craft), it's game over.
Growth.

"If you don't try to improve your skills every day, you might quickly become out of fashion." - @mchiama

Even imperfection requires evolution.
Miss out on landing a @mchiama 1/1?

He posts experimental works on @rariblecom. It's a chance for him to embrace a different style...perfection.

"Hypnoswirl was 90 frames, 3 seconds, perfectly looping. It's a specific set of skills to achieve swirling and infinite movement."
Matt Chiama drops F*CK series 4, 5, and 6 today on @makersplaceco at 1:00pm EST.
