There’s a weirdly 2 pronged challenge w guitar (w MANY forks) broadly put; Proficiency vs. (Self) Expression. Complicated by the myriad ways those challenges can dovetail & clash. On the Other hand, it’s possible to be wholly original (microtonal tunings from the 9th Galaxy, songs with Klingon lyrics, in a papier-mâché crown) that preclude you from jingle dates. Your goals may be modest. Or extravagant. For myself, it’s a question of near & far goals.
To be specific- I work to 1) maintain(hopefully expand) what I’m capable & am available to play up to THIS point, from the beginning of my playing life. 2) expand the boundaries or what I’m capable of. Guitar takes Time & Will. Mindful Repetition. Time AWAY from it. Reapplication
Perhaps, most of all, the ability to deal with Boredom & Frustration by taking solace & pleasure from Incremental Victories. Diving into The Suck. Coming out the other side. .You have to ask yourself a fundamental question-Why Do It At All? Don’t flinch from the answer that comes
