I really don’t mean this in a sarcastic or cheap way, but the recent panic in certain US quarters over France’s alleged overreaction to the murder of 300 of its citizens, and the risk of very real overreaction to the disgrace at the Capitol are very much part of the same trend https://twitter.com/conor64/status/1349475318143205378
France introduced a relatively uncontroversial law which took years to draft & hundreds of murders to prompt & was decried as descending into fascism. In contrast some are now cheering for rushed domestic terror legislation, no fly lists for US citizens & corporate led censorship
I don’t know if pointing out this paradox (and at times outright hypocrisy) is even worth it or particularly illuminating, but just an observation. Clearly some of the same drivers behind the reaction to both.
