I’m watching people from conservative circles get interested in Christian nationalism and I can already tell you what 90 percent of responses will be. The church is perfect the way it is, nothing needs to change (except people need to be more like me), and Drs. https://twitter.com/socofthesacred/status/1349526714175660035
Perry and Whitehead are hopelessly misguided sociologists and I can find all the flaws in their methodology with my four-year degree from business school. We never need to talk about the man being beaten to death with an American flag next to a Jesus Saves sign again.
It’s going to be the new CRT. Look for it. Guaranteed.
There are entire stretches of Christianity in the US where “we already have it figured out and we don’t need to learn anything, particularly from people who aren’t already known authorities” is a foundational belief.
The idea that white Christians need to hear from black Christians was already deeply upsetting. I can’t imagine how hearing that American Christians need to decenter their Americanness is going to go well.
I also can’t help but notice that a lot of the same people who are irritated about black people “making everything about race” think that being American and a man is really cool and noteworthy and needs way more celebration and positive attention.
“We are ALL Christians, whether we are black white brown or purple. Except men from America are awesome Christians and we need to talk about how fierce and cool and necessary and delicate and endangered and essential this one awesome substrata of Christian is.”
