For months, when the Coronavirus hit, filmmakers had to shut down all productions.
Yet, some actresses managed to make the most of the year. They appeared in a few movies (in cinemas, on TV or the web). Many of them set themselves up for more success this year.
Our list celebrates seventeen fast-rising actresses who won 2020 and who we believe will take over in 2021.
@mynameisbukola ruled the web series space in 2020 as ‘Tiara’ on Red TV’s ‘The Men’s Club’ and ‘Ini’ on Ndani TV’s ‘Phases’.
@_TTwA_ made her debut Nollywood performance on Nigeria’s 2020 Oscar submission, ‘The Milkmaid’. She received critical acclaim for her role as ‘Aisha’ in the film.
@BeverlyNaya earned her first-ever AMVCA for her ground-breaking documentary, ‘Skin’ early in 2020. She then ended the year as a cast member on the remake of ‘Nneka The Pretty Serpent’.
Ebenezer Eno featured in the movie adaptation of ‘The Smart Money Woman’ and a couple of made-for-TV films in 2020. She also joined the cast of Ndani TV’s newly premiered series, ‘Game On’.
@capt_elma appeared in two major blockbusters, ‘Rattle Snake: The Ahanna Story’ and ‘Quam’s Money’ in 2020. She is also a part of ‘Unbroken’, that is currently showing on Africa Magic.
@EricaNlewedim’s biggest feature, ‘Hire A Woman’ came to Netflix in 2020. She then appeared on the Lockdown season of Big Brother Naija where she showed off her acting prowess through tasks in the house.
In 2020, Idia Aisien made her debut Nollywood appearance as the lead actor in ‘Nneka The Pretty Serpent’. Critics have commended her for a job well done on her debut film.
Last year, @TheLotaChukwu took on a new role on Africa Magic’s ‘Enakhe’ as ‘Jacinta Osaghie’ and also appeared in Kayode Kasum’s ‘This Lady Called Life’.
@mimi_chaka ruled 2020 as ‘Queen Mofe’ in Africa Magic’s ‘Riona’ and ‘Tumini’ in popular web series, ‘The Men’s Club’.
@TheNengers showed off her acting prowess in her role as ‘Lola’ in Red TV’s ‘The Men’s Club’. She also acted in her self-written and produced web series, ‘The Most Toasted Girl In The World’.
@dadaomowunmi earned more acclaim in 2020 after two feature films she played major roles in, ‘Oloture’ and ‘Diamonds in The Sky’ appeared on Netflix. She ended the year on a high note with the premiere of her new Ndani TV web-series, ‘Game On’.
@SharonOoja’s role as ‘Oluture’ in EbonyLife’s 2020 movie, ‘Oloture’ was a bold declaration that she’s a brilliant actress to watch out for this year.
@SophieRammal_ took on the big world of web series in Red TV’s ‘Assistant Madams’ and ‘Skinny Girl in Transit’ in 2020. She also appeared in a ROK Studios’ horror film, ‘Manifestation’. Sophie has a new web series, ‘Grow Up Or Nuts’ currently showing on YouTube.
@TemiOtedola made an amazing Nollywood debut on Kunle Afolayan’s tri-lingual Netflix film, ‘Citation’ as the main character.
In 2020, @theteniola appeared on ‘Lola of Lagos’, ‘Finding Hubby’, ‘On Board To Love’, and ‘Unbroken’. She’s already winning 2021 as she started by featuring on a new web series, ‘Little Black Book’.
@uzoamaka_a1 took on the most daring roles as ‘Ife’ in the LGBTQ+ film, ‘Ife’ and ‘The Zipman’ in Nigeria’s first superhero film, ‘Ananze and The Zipman’ in 2020’. Uzoamaka is currently playing the role of ‘Kumene’ on Africa Magic’s ‘Riona’.
In 2020, @VenitaAkpofure took on the role of ‘Nengimote’ in ‘Unmarried’. She also featured in ‘Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards’. We are going to be looking out to see what she does this year and so should you!
