The expansion of shipbuilding in #Whitby was to a large extent due to the of the growth coal and to a lesser extent alum industries. No doubt the area has been producing the coble boats locally for centuries but the first recorded ships to be built were the Margaret,
Pelican and Love's Increase which were granted certificates in 1626/27. Larger scale shipbuilding began in the mid 18th century with the opening of Jarvis Coates' yard earlier in the same century. By 1802 there were some thirteen working yards. Many of the ships were
constructed for the transport of the raw materials. see 'A Maritime History of the Port of Whitby 1700-1914 for a full account of the port's history. https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/1381923/1/389634.pdf
