OK, so we're not sure if this is (or will become) a *thing* 😀 but if it does, here's our 1st thread for #RomanFortThursday

This is Lake Farm a legionary fortress near #Wimborne #Dorset

Home to the Legio II Augusta and (almost certainly) the future emperor #Vespasian 👇👇
Lake Farm #Dorset was found in 1959. Excavation suggested it was a base of the Legio II Augusta during its conquest of SW Britain in the mid 40s AD

Our geophysical survey confirmed the 12.8ha legionary fortress, overlain by a series of modern roads and tracks

The boundary ditch of Lake Farm legionary fortress shows up very nicely on the geophysical survey

The multiple hearth-like anomalies that can be seen behind it probably indicate ovens inserted into the rear of the earth rampart

The geofiz survey of Lake Farm legionary fortress suggests the praetorium / commanders house lies under the modern road and bridge embankment

Evidence for #Vespasian, Legate of the II Augusta (and first named resident of #Dorset), must therefore wait...

The interior layout of the II Augusta fortress at Lake Farm #Dorset is marked on the geophysical survey by drains, running in the centre of roads forming a connected grid, splitting the fort into a number of well-defined insulae

Beneath the legionary fortress of Lake Farm #Dorset were traces of a larger ‘playing-card’ shaped circuit, measuring at least 450m E-W x 550m N-S

It seems likely this represents an earlier phase of construction, probably a marching camp constructed c AD 44

In a field South of Lake Farm Roman legionary fortress our geofiz located a ditch filled with highly magnetic material. Limited excavation suggests this was part of an industrial annexe

Geophysical survey to the E of Lake Farm #Roman legionary fortress shows a road to the river Stour

Strong anomalies can be seen either side of the road suggesting the presence of a civilian settlement / vicus
