Let’s break this down a bit. I’m not going to talk for the other 3 because I reckon their work speaks for itself but also, they can choose to speak for themselves if they wish to. But if you’re stupid enough to but into these arguments, I’m going to break it down for you from me.
Firstly, JP is herself educated and from what I’ve been told, also has English as a first language. So what’s her point there? She lives in Alice Springs not some humpy in the remote regions, her kids go to good schools, we’re all living under the colonial system here...
...so positioning herself as some type of “authentic Aboriginal commentator” whilst the rest of us are apparently urban educated frauds is fucking hilarious. I’m pretty certain her own mother has been to uni, so what’s this stigma about education really about?
Now, I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but I am literally a feminist. It was right there in my blog title which got me writing gigs. It’s still on my FB page. What’s more, I’m an actual marriage abolitionist who has maintained that stance since I was 16 & has written about it.
Why do I highlight this? Well it's simple: if I am a marriage abolitionist, what are the chances of me supporting arranged marriages, particularly when they involve teenage girls? I mean, logically-speaking? I will just leave you to ponder that whilst I move on to my next point
One of my continuous arguments is that Aboriginal people were not floating around in suspended animation, prior to white people showing up and "discovering" us. Culture developed, culture changed. The evidence for this is in our well-developed traditional law systems and...
...other practices such as totems which were based around recognising creation and ensuring extinction did not occur. Why have these? It's simple - ancestors had already witnessed what can happen without practices and protections and so they incorporated them. If you read the...
...responses from the knuckledraggers responding to JP's post, you quickly realise they believe Aboriginal culture to have been stagnant, undeveloped and archaic. In short, her supporters tend to be white supremacist dickheads who believe they brought "civilisation" here. Now...
...I want to address another point: her continual claims that we also don't speak about abuse in the community. Frankly, I have now written so many articles about family and domestic violence that I have lost count of the number. What's more, I have spoken of my own experiences..
...as a survivor. I have quoted the inflated FVDV statistics in Indigenous communities in so many spaces and for a two year period, I was their trawling through news and police reports to actually count how many Aboriginal women had died as a result of FVDV.
Where was she when I was doing this? Well, pretty much accepting plum speaking gigs talking about how the Indigenous Left never talks about this stuff. The same shit she's claiming now for her piece of notoriety whilst her salivating fashy fans mash their keyboards in agreement.
So my final point is this: it is possible to both advocate for the rights of abused Aboriginal women and children and also hit the streets to demand an end to the colonial violence enacted upon our people. One type of activism can be done concurrently with the other and I have...
...continuously witnessed admirable people who work with the abused every single day, or who advocate for their rights, do exactly this. She has no fucking clue about these people, nor is she interested because they don't fit the arguments she get paid to plug in her plum...
Centre for Independent Studies gig. She'd much rather play the same tired old arguments her racist fans love because they keep the $$ rolling in. And truly, that's some gammin gaslighting bullshit right there.
My advice, you want to know about what Indigenous activists are doing re: these issues, go to the sources. Read work by Indigenous feminist scholars, check out the grassroots programs being developed by our self-determined FVDV organisations, chat to those strong Aboriginal...
...women who have set up domestic violence shelters and work every day to protect the vulnerable. Don't read the bullshit spouted by a person who only ever uses the plight of Indigenous abuse victims as a trump card to discredit Indigenous activism elsewhere. Cheers.
PS Sorry for the long thread with copious spelling mistakes and the wrong "their" used at least once. I probably won't be discussing it further.
