Hello sports journos, editors, subs & radio/tv producers! I'm sharing this in the hope it will be helpful and you will pass it on. Loads of us keep getting Ravichandran Ashwin's name wrong, both in print and the spoken word. I've seen it a lot, just in the past couple of days.

His name isn't 'Ravi'. It's not his nickname, either. His nickname is Ash, in the same way mine is Mel. Calling him 'Ravi' would be like calling me 'Farr'. It would be weird because it's not my name or nickname. It's just 4 letters that appear at the start of my surname.

I didn't know this until someone told me and I'm glad they did. So please share this with colleagues, put it in your style guides and if you don't have room for his full name then R Ashwin also works.
