It seems like every generation falls into the trap of pushing everybody in the following generation into what is seen to be the most profitable/highest paying careers in their generation.

In our parents' generation, the emphasis was on going to college/university to study
usually, medicine, law or engineering.

This was because, at the very least, anyone with a university education in their generation was guaranteed a ticket out of poverty.

What parents do not get (and this generation seems not to have learnt) is the fact that if more people move
into a certain profession, the profession cannot be high paying for everyone

The reason why most people with a college education in the 80s/90s were guaranteed at minimum a good middle-class life was because the supply of people with the same skill level was not large. Since the
supply was limited and demand was there, those people could benefit from access to well-paying jobs.

Fast forward to 2 decades later, having a college education is NOT a guaranteed ticket to a good middle-class life because, among several other things, the supply (labour market)
of people with a college education is vast. The supply pool of university graduates is almost 3 times it was in our parents' generation without the same increase in the demand for graduates

Now, we're making the same mistake. Tech is booming, STEM courses are getting the kind of
attention graduates got in the 80s, and people seem to be falling for the same trap of pushing more and more people into STEM

A better approach would be for people to find profitable ways to do what they're interested in. There is room for capital to circulate to as many people
as are skilled and do what they are skilled at well. Let people do that.

There are taps everywhere for people to drink, the practice of pushing everyone to line up at the tap that is flowing per time will always lead to long lines and more people not getting anything to drink.
Emphasize people doing what they can do, are naturally great at, are interested in doing; and help them find profitable ways to do it.
