Recently I had a question from researchers at the Göttingen University to license this database, so I am very happy that it is available through the FID! Thanks @FIDRomanistik! 1/n https://twitter.com/NanetteRissler/status/1349234854764957696
In this case, the researchers wanted it to read the texts in digital format. Probably not the best use of databases, but there are little options for eBooks of good editions of classic literary texts. 2/n
And this is partly our fault. The academic system does not encourage nor recognize the work of preparing digital editions properly. There are very few long-term financed projects for that. @textarchiv is an exception. 3/n
The @ClasiHispanicos have been doing this for Spanish for a time, only for the sake of art. Any attempt of finding funders were fruitless. Since last year, it is open for free http://www.clasicoshispanicos.com/  4/n
It is also the fault of the Digital Humanities community. DH encourage to rather work on already existing data sets. Creating your own demands a lot of time, often your free time, because funders often do not support it. 5/n
Gathering data is not seen as scientific contribution. Having a publication about the analysis of a data set has more value than the publication of the data set itself. This sends a clear message: spend your time on the analysis, avoid losing time in the preparation. 6/n
To read a recent article in which this is discussed, see: Erhlicher & Lehmann, 2021: http://revistas.uned.es/index.php/signa/article/view/29298 7/n
That is why I am against licensing things under CC-0: A further step in not valuing this work and make the editors invisible.
So, it is not surprising that both editors or publishing houses are so conservative about these matters :) 9/9
