A #MichaelThinks on the Great Twitter Purge if 2021.
The number of accounts quickly popping up with "_returns" added to their old handle is a little sad, but also an opportunity to steal some of those handles that have been purged and steal... @democracymum_returns anyone?
Most of the deleted/suspended accounts are faceless, nameless, anonymous accounts that generally feel difficult to differentiate from bots as they retweet a lot, and quote verbatim US lines.
It shows how disorganised the activist right is - they're freaking because they are losing contact on Twitter because that *is* their activism. They are all words.
That's no to say there aren't some dangerous folk reading their tweets, just that the majority would prefer the anonymous screaming into the Twitter hole than a real life conversation.
I'm actually not a huge fan of the purge, I'd sooner have seen them manage their guidelines more consistently in the past so that the most vile of the accounts were already gone.
I feel sad for some of the people behind the accounts. Their "000s of followers" is probably the most validation they've ever had.
My experience is greatly improved without the accounts, though to be fair, most had already blocked me.
If there was a left purge, I reckon the majority of lefties would be multiply connected with their followers - facebook, cellphones etc - so it wouldn't be causing the outrage and fear that the right is experiencing.
Anyhow, just some #MichaelThinks
