LRT: this is the moral of Birth of a Nation with its valorization and reiteration of post reconstruction politics. Unity in this context means the north and the south uniting around white supremacy to murder Black people and overthrow multiracial government. 1
so it's not surprising in an American context that supporters of a fascist coup would call for unity. Fascism prizes unity—a unity of a white nation under a single leader, that unity cemented with the blood of racial others.
that's why there's no contradiction for Matthew Cawthorn in viciously attacking the left one minute and calling for unity the next. "Unity" is an ethnonationalist call for him, and it excludes those who aren't white supremacists by design.
people should treat fascist calls for unity with a whole lot of skepticism. and should recognize them for what they are: not a move towards reconciliation, but a threat.
fascists love unity. the coup attempt was an effort to arrive at unity by murdering the opposition.
fascists believe murder can be a great unifier. not only does it get rid of the most troublesome, it scares the rest into silence.
