I received my first dose of the #CovidVaccine yesterday. It has brought up many feelings - including the surreal thought that perhaps there will be an end to all this. /1
Despite my great joy and gratitude, I am overwhelmed by the thought that I am receiving this vaccine when I am because I am a hospital-affiliated family doctor in an urban centre in a high income country. /2
While over 40 countries have started vaccinating, they are almost all high-income countries. My fellow healthcare workers in low income countries are not getting this vaccine when I am. In times of crisis, as #COVID19 has shown us time and again, we see power at play. /3
And then within Canada, while those of us affiliated with hospitals in urban centres are getting access now, those in community-based settings are still not there. Family docs across the province not affiliated with hospitals don't yet know when they'll be vaccinated. /4
And that's physicians.. now think of the community-based nurses, the community mental health workers who I see continue to support their clients with home visits, appointment accompaniements, mental health support in this desperate time. /5
And how about the shelter workers, to me the heroes of our society - who give their all to serve those who are most marginalized amongst us, in crowded settings where following public health measures is tricky both structurally and due to people's illnesses. #COVID19 /6
And beyond workers, we have the marginalized people themselves -those in our prison system who are being scapegoated by conservative politicians, the people experiencing homelessness who are 5x more likely to die of #COVID19 in Ontario, the migrant workers harvesting our food. /7
