Why Metal Gear Solid (1998) should NOT get a PS5 remake.
[A thread]
Level design:
The level design of Shadow Moses would have to be redone completely. Shadow Moses is very blocky, areas are small, and there are only 3 guards per stealth area. This is because of the limits of the PS1, and the game is completely designed around these limits. (1/4)
If Shadow Moses was given an HD facelift with the gameplay of MGSV, the game would be supremely easy with how small the play area is. As seen in Twin Snakes, just transferring the MGS2 gameplay already broke the game in many cases, rendering the game too easy. (2/4)
If the level design of Shadow Moses were to be redesigned, then it wouldn't be Shadow Moses anymore. It would be "some base in Alaska with the name Shadow Moses".
The iconic look of the base was even recreated in MGS4, where the exteriors and interiors of Shadow Moses- (3/4)
are a one to one recreation of the PS1's level design. If a remake decided to wildly adjust the design, it would mess with the legacy and continuity of the series. Speaking of legacy... (4/4)
Legacy:
MGS1 and it's pixelated PS1 look is referenced many times in other games, from flashbacks in MGS2 and MGS4, to aesthetic costumes in MGSV. Putting it into HD would be a disservice to it's legacy as a PS1 game. Not to mention the iconic codec call portraits would also(1/4)
be need to be redone. They looked the way they do in MGS1 because of the PS1. The polygonal character models are supplemented by the simply animated codec portraits. Keeping the portraits would look jarring today if the 3D model of a character looks insanely real. (2/4)
Everything iconic about MGS1's look and design would either need to be changed or kept out of obligation, which makes it a lose-lose situation.
Why play a game that changes things only for it to toss the legacy out the window, and why play a game that keeps everything the (3/4)
same when you can just play the original game. (4/4)

Sound and music:
MGS1's music, sound design, and voice acting are all well performed and iconic. The encounter theme, the codec sound, the quotable dialogue from each and every character, the PS1's audio capabilities (1/5)
were stretched to the limits, giving movie quality sound to a video game world that looks like it was made out of Lego bricks. A common complaint about the Twin Snakes is that the voice performances aren't as good as the PS1 game's. Now of course it would be nice to have- (2/5)
the old voice actors come back and rerecord their lines-- wait a minute.
Just watch the Digital Graphic Novel adaptation of MGS1!! It's a retelling of MGS1 with a comic book artstyle, with fully recorded voice lines done by the voice actors themselves. This means there are (3/5)
three different fully voiced versions of MGS1 that have already been done, PS1, Twin Snakes, and the Graphic Novel. There is absolutely no need to adapt the same story a third time just to hear a voice performance that can't stand up to the original, or music that (4/5)
doesn't match the original's infectious and atmospheric soundtrack. (5/5)

Twin Snakes:
If you want to play a remake of MGS1, play Twin Snakes, it's a good enough supplement to the PS1 game that it stands as it's own product that enhances the legacy (1/3)
of not only MGS1 but also the MGS series. Not by replacing the PS1 game but by reimagining it in a bombasticly comical way that dared to do what it did. We don't need another remake since MGS1's story has been stretched to it's limits. What we need instead is a rerelease (2/3)
of the PS1 game and Twin Snakes, to preserve the two versions of the game that have already been made so the modern generation can experience the games as they were meant to be experienced. And if you can't stomach the old graphics, then suck it up, buttercup!! (3/3)
Conclusion:
What I ultimately would like to see on PS5 is a rerelease of the MGS Legacy Collection, with all of it's games intact and unchanged (aside from frame rate and glitch fixes).
And if they really do decide to remake a game from the MGS series, it should be the MSX titles
Why I think the MSX titles should be remade is a whole new discussion for another thread.
