One thing that I instantly noticed when starting Grace was there was a strange similarity between Buckley and Thom Yorke’s voice particularly their falsettos, and when I looked into it it turns out he directly inspired yorkes’s vocals. Radiohead was working on The Bends
(Specifically fake plastic trees) and hit a block so they went to the Garage in London where Jeff was performing and heard his set. York was in awe of his voice and they came back and recorded FPT, and I think it’s safe to say from songs like Nude that the influence remains
His son Forget Her is absolutely stunning and certainly would’ve been a hit, however Buckley cut it from the record and replaced it with So Real because he was a real one and wanted to respect his ex’s privacy
Jeff was very hot and hated being hot because he thought it distracted people from the music, when he was named one of the 50 most attractive people in 1995 by a magazine he was embarrassed by it and teased by his friends about it
He turned down offers for modeling, acting, and even making a song for a Tarantino film (which Im assume wouldve been Jackie Brown?) His only goal was to make music that would outlive him and I think it’s pretty sweet that he succeeded
And this one is the most upsetting and just something I’ve personally noticed on relistens. On Grace’s title track Jeff alludes to death and at one point drowning. The album was released in 1994, 3 years before he’d drown swimming on night in Memphis in 1997
You could definitely say this one is reaching but I just think it’s really fucking eerie but a little poetic at the same time. I really wish Jeff was still here, we were truly robbed of one of the most talented individuals of all time
Your takeaways should be:
-Jeff was extremely talented
-he was a real one almost to a fault, consistently picking art over the bag
-without Jeff the Radiohead we know today most likely wouldn’t exist
