While setting up a makeshift “desk” upstairs for learning at home (the dinner table is just not working for this), our kiddo was worried that her friends and educators would see the stains/chips on her little hand-me-down table. 1/
We made a cloth cover to pretty it up, but I was surprised and saddened that it mattered to her what others would think at this young age, and that she’s already thinking about how to “put on a show” for others. 2/
Now I’m also thinking of the kids who don’t even have a makeshift desk. The ones who are scared to log into a virtual meet with cameras on because they’re worried that a drunk parent, half-naked sibling or mentally ill family member might walk into the room and cause a scene. 3/
The kids who are scared that we might see that there are 10 people crowded into their tiny one room apartment with blankets, pillows, clothing, and garbage strewn all over the floor. 4/
The kids who are scared that we will see and judge how they live. Educator friends, please don’t tell your students that they need to have “cameras on” and be in a “quiet, distraction-free setting”. Not every student has this privilege. 5/5 #OntEd #Equity
