With the appropriate supports and resources, every single student has the ability to achieve academically. For decades, we have invested in a system that creates opportunities for SOME, not ALL students.
on why we should move away from calling it an "achievement gap" 1/

Phrase "achievement gap" has long been used to highlight academic disparities that exist between students of color and white students. The connotation is that students of color and low-income families have deficits that they have to overcome in order to achieve academically. 2/
This mentality is flawed. Our students of color are not deficits or problems that need to be solved. Every single one of them is a valuable asset deserving of investment. The real issue, is that our communities have not been afforded adequate "opportunities" to excel. 3/
For far too long, communities of color and low-income families have been up against vast and various "opportunity gaps" that exist in our system. It is on us to close those gaps in opportunity. Let's not put the onus on our kids, they have nothing to overcome. 4/
ALL students can and will achieve when we believe in them, invest in them, honor and respect them. We can start by taking responsibility to invest strategically and equitably in our education system. But that is our responsibility as the adults, let's not put that on our kids. 5/
I want to live in an Arizona where ALL communities have access to opportunity and justice. Where no child is at risk of falling behind, where parents feel valued and supported and most importantly where ALL kids feel loved and honored in their classrooms. 6/
Where every single attribute that students and families carry is viewed as an asset that should be nurtured and developed so they can be our state’s future leaders.
So let's come together to close "OPPORTUNITY GAPS" for ALL students. @allinedaz 7/7
