Thread of what I’m reading in 2021
Starting with this. Never read a book about Pakistan before
Always find myself wondering what is a good explanation for why Nigeria has never had political dynasties at the national level. I can’t think of any former military dictator who has a child in frontline politics
Pakistan and Nigeria, same energy
A savvy/cynical Pashtun politician explains:
The discussion of the rivalry between Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah (featuring Edwina Mountbatten 👀👀👀) in the run up to Partition has been the highlight of this excellent book so far
Pashtun saying I like - “If a bald man grows fingernails, tomorrow he will injure himself” (Give power to a foolish person and he will soon destroy himself)
Have to reassess my long held view that Nigeria and Pakistan are equally crazy. I think Pakistan is crazier but on current trajectory, this is where Nigeria is headed. Had to stop several times to google a story after asking myself - can this be real?
Next read - finally getting round to this
