New analysis from MAPC: New TNC fees included in the transportation bond bill could raise over $100 million annually. We strongly urge @MassGovernor to sign them into law to encourage shared rides and reduce traffic and emissions. #mapoli #TNC https://www.mapc.org/resource-library/2021-tnc-fees/
Today, there's a $0.20 fee on all TNC rides in MA. The new structure would charge a $0.40 fee for shared rides, $1.20 fee for solo rides, and create two new fees: $1 for luxury rides and $0.20 on trips that start and end in the MBTA core service area.
We estimated two revenue scenarios, one with current (pandemic) levels of ride-hailing, and one with a return to 2019 levels of TNC use. Of course, the reality in 2021 and 2022 might be in between.
Even with pandemic levels of use, new fees would raise $56.2 million in revenue (to compare, the current $0.20 fee raised $18.2 million in 2019).
Adopting this new TNC fee structure would raise much-needed revenue for local and statewide transportation investments, promote more sustainable travel, and alleviate congestion we know will rebound as the Commonwealth reopens.
Thanks to champions @BrendanCrighton, @joeboncore, @adrianmadaro, and @jaylivingstone for pushing for TNC fees! We applaud the Legislature for including this provision, as well as the TNC data sharing requirements.
And thanks to @MassGovernor for your original proposal around TNC fees and data sharing! We encourage you to sign this section of the transportation bond bill into law.
