I understand this professor’s need to be respected by her students...but she included accommodations and that is not okay.

There should be NO requirements to get accommodations.

Accommodations are a human right.

There must not be additional barriers to receiving them.

Disabled people face so many barriers in our society already.

Having to request accommodations in the first place is a barrier - accommodations should be actively offered and provided.

But attaching arbitrary language rules to requesting accommodations? That is ableist.

(2/?)
So many disabled people don‘t get accommodations they need & have a right to because of arbitrary, unnecessary, unjustified barriers like this.

It is SO hard to navigate the system.

There are so many (unwritten, untaught!) rules - and they differ from person to person!

(3/?)
Getting accommodations is hard work.

It‘s struggle and suffering.

It often means distress, shame, guilt...even without additional barriers.

How many disabled people don‘t even try anymore or at all because they already know they can‘t navigate the system or do it right?

(4/?)
How ironically ableist is it to demand e.g. learning/developmentally/intellectually disabled people whose disabilities include LANGUAGE and SOCIAL differences use „proper“ language when requesting accommodations?!

And it isn‘t just this person.
This happens ALL THE TIME.

(5/?)
Finally, this isn‘t just about requesting accommodations.

It‘s also about general societal attitudes.

Because „Only language I deem appropriate will be deemed acceptable.“ sentiments are ableist in ALL contexts.

They lead to discrimination against disabled people.

(6/?)
Now some people have suggested that if you have language rules, you aught to teach them to your students first - and then it‘s okay.

No.
It‘s really not.

Because not everyone can do this stuff, even if taught.
And such language rules are still arbitrary and ableist.

(7/?)
Now just to clarify this:

I‘m not saying we should accept people addressing us with insults. But the complaint here was people starting emails with „Hello“ instead of „Dear professor“.

I‘m saying dismantle these personal, arbitrary, unnecessary, ableist barriers.

(8/?)
And lastly, this is also an equality issue.

This person even said students and professors are not equals and used that as justification for her demand which...yes, they are actually.

All human beings are equal.

We need to DISMANTLE these hierarchies, not build more.

(9/?)
A professor should respect their students exactly the same as students should respect their professor. Equals.

Demanding respect based on one‘s position is...problematic.

Human beings should see and treat each other as equals.

That includes disabled people.

Thanks.
