Was reminded earlier by a chat with @MartynWaites about the eccentric style that the publishers Gollancz used to employ for their cover quotes. https://twitter.com/SSheil/status/1349416985751416838
This might be the favourite I’ve seen - which might be the earliest example of a publisher negging the reader into buying
This one has a real ‘updates her own wikipedia page’ vibe about it
These quotation marks read as sarcasm
This one takes a few turns
Enjoying the slightly pissy tone of the purple box
“Take that you dumbass Ian Fleming fans"
Gollancz also have a tendency to cut off quotes halfway through, continuing them on the back or inside, which often leaves you with cliffhangers like this ‘unguessable hole'
“Turn to the flaps"
All right mate, we don’t need your life story
Up yours Priestley, you’re not the boss of me!
Spoken like an angry man
I love their absolute conviction that everyone will know what numismatics means
And finally, a Gollancz in uncharacteristically racy mood
