It's startling for us to see so many troops on Capitol Hill.

But "there have been a number of events in U.S. history since the Civil War during which federal troops were called on to maintain order on the Capitol grounds" - per the Senate historian's office.

Per the historian:
- In 1894 troops were called in to disperse Coxey’s Army, a protest march by unemployed workers.
- Troops were also present during riots in DC in 1919 and in 1932 soldiers at times guarded the Capitol Building during the months-long Bonus Marcher protest.
But there were only two occasions where troops stayed overnight in the Capitol:

- During World War II
- Amidst riots in 1968
