Inspired by @tha_rami and @momvsgames, I recently asked my mom if she'd want to try some games. She hasn't played any in her life. No console games, no mobile games, no Space Cadet Pinball. She said she would! With her permission to share, here's how it's been going:
I sent her a list of good intro games she might like, and from that list she said she'd like to try Overcooked, Firewatch, and A Short Hike. We went with A Short Hike by @adamgryu first to ease her into controls with its chill gameplay.
She got used to the arrow key controls pretty quickly (we're getting her a controller soon). Mom was careful to take small steps so she wouldn't fall into the water, as there are lots of cliffs and bridges at odd angles to fall off of. But soon I realized something:
She had no idea she could hold the arrow key to keep moving. With a joystick she might've known, but the concept of holding down a key to continually do an action was completely foreign. As soon as I told her, though, she caught on very quickly.
After exploring the island a while and learning she needed coins to buy a Golden Feather, mom became really comfortable with traversing the area, jumping up to ledges, backtracking, and the trial and error of trying to glide across to high spots.
She really enjoyed the conversations with islanders. She talked a lot with one character who explained how to glide, to the point where they just shouted "NO" when she interacted with them. Mom thought this was hilarious.
We left off when she got enough coins for the Golden Feather, figuring it a good stopping point. But it was wonderful to watch my mom learn in real time, and to see her enjoying this medium I've loved for so long.
Unfortunately we live on opposite coasts, so this was all online. But today my sister sent me this picture of my mom playing Overcooked with my brother in law:
That's all for now, but I'd like to update this thread as she continues to get into games! Thanks for reading 😀
