There's lots of ick in the news, so I want to tell you a story about how a great doctor made a difference for one of my kids. (Sharing this with permission from that kid, of course).

Our youngest (14) has ADHD and we went to see his specialist yesterday. 1/
J started high school this year and despite working really hard just can't get focused/spaces out. He asked to go see the doc because everything he's doing isn't working. Time to try some meds again.

His doctor is an ADHD + concussion specialist. He knows he stuff.

Dr. G did some very important things:

1. He drew a diagram of the brain and explained the various parts where ADHD and anxiety live and how they can play off each other (esp. during a pandemic!) He reminded J that he has an actual brain thing and it's not his fault.
3/
2. He talked about all the different tools people with ADHD can use to help themselves including good sleep hygiene, exercise, mindfulness, yoga, meditation, natural supplements, etc. He helped J develop a plan to incorporate more of those & also prescribed new meds to help.
4/
3. The dr. made my 14yo an active, equal partner in his own treatment.

How did this help? My son left empowered and encouraged to try these new treatments. He didn't feel talked down to or ignored.

And THAT, I believe, is how patients should always feel when they leave a doctor's office. Thanks to all the great doctors out there who remember the humanity of their patients. It makes a big difference.
