I’m headed outside the Capitol to see the security presence and protests.

Follow along here.
Many, many blocks from the Capitol, DC police are setting up a wide perimeter.

This is Massachusetts and 3rd St NW.
FYI: Soundtrack from the trip down there: Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral
National Guard trucks rolling snd stationed a few blocks north of the Mall area.

They’re blocking roadways heading toward the Mall/Capitol.
Talked to 2 DC NatGuard members posted at checkpoint. Their job is keep traffic from moving toward Capitol. If someone needs to drive near it for good reason, they’re sent to a checkpoint for sweeping.

One said order to do this came yesterday. Unsure how long will be out here.
Fencing around the Capitol extends for AWHILE
You can see NatGuard members, Secret Service, and other authorities stationed near the Capitol (and beyond the fence)
The amount of armed force on the Mall is staggering
. @DCPoliceDept has a hefty presence outside the fence
Spoke with Officer Worrell of DC Police (she didn’t want to give me her first name).

She’s stationed outside the Capitol perimeter fence and has been there since 3am.

When I asked how long DC Police plans to be out here, she said “you probably know more than I do.”
A normally busy Pennsylvania Ave is desolate
The split screen here is nuts.

On one side of the fence, armed National Guard and a heavy force presence.

On the other side, they’re setting up the Mall for the Biden inauguration.

Despite @MayorBowser asking people not to attend, they’re setting up for a big crowd.
Putting up more fence outside the Capitol
Spoke to 3 members of PA NatGuard. Been here 6 days, planning to stay through inauguration.

They don’t feel like local forces really need the help to protect the Capitol daily. Say they’re mostly here to deter against another insurrection.

One was leaning back, stretching out.
Another member of PA NG: “Things are slow, very slow. ... We’re here just in case, and you know what I mean.”
Spoke to member of @CapitolPolice who said he’s been out since 7am, and all are working 16 hour shifts. Normally it’s 8 hours.

He’s unsure when it goes back to normal.
