After many incidents, an afternoon show that maybe I should have watched ( https://twitter.com/karthikadhaigal/status/1349385182239805441?s=19), finally had issues sorted out and went for the 7:40 show of Master.

So here is the Detailed #MasterFilm review (No spoilers) (1/n)
There hasn't been a tamil movie like this where the hero is so ordinary. Vijay is just a normal guy. Unlike ALL his previous movies and infact all the mass movies before, he's not a super hero. He's broken. Has a lot of flaws. (2/n)
I liked Yennai arindhaal because it showed the hero in a vulnerable state post his loss but the issue with that was that Goutham Menon put the same bland scenes in between the moments of very good quality (3/n)
Master avoids this by 2 ways. One is by Vijay having a character driven performance. Every time he is going to lose , we don't see him rescue the day like in all his movies. It happens in a very realistic way, afterwards. Lokesh was right. VIJAY HAS NEVER BEEN LIKE This (4/n)
But the biggest plus this movie has is Vijay sethupathi. There is no exaggeration that this is best commercial role. It even goes past vedha in vikram vedha. He is actually like the hero. He gets all the punch dialogues, never panics. He makes fun of all the usual heroism (5/n)
There is a scene that builds towards the interval with VJS In the juvenile home. It is on of the most raw, disturbing scenes a mass movie has had but VJS still makes you watch it.What an actor. I don't any actor has given the antagonist this much space since . Vikram vedha (6/n)
This is a movie where everyone gets a mass scene.Every important person in the crew gets a mass scene. All their characters get an ending. Even the cat gets a scene to show its character getting completed. This is the perfect definition of a multi starter. Everyone is a hero (7/n)
But make it work commercially, you need a hero with the star power that can keep the audience interested throughout. There comes Vijay. (8/n)f
For a man whose career was said to be over after his 50th movie (sura) due to the Same mannerisms, with master he stakes his claim as the 1st south Indian superstar with a mass movie that is so progressive, you'll wonder when was the last time we've something like this (9/n)
Vijay as JD is amazing because he's not perfect. He's not the hero sent by the gods to kill the villain. He is a guy that masks his personal pain with alcohol and with a thug life reply everytime someone becomes emotional (10/n)
Many times it's like Vijay is making fun of the roles he's made till now and that is shown very clearly. He has only one punch dialogue but when that dialogue hits, the entire theater is on its feet for a minute (11/n)
Thupaaki showed Vijay in a different shade. This shows him in an even more different way. He is just another character in the movie. But Vijay executes it so well that his sheer Stardom is added to everything he does. Such an arresting performance (12/n)
Vijay doesn't show off his dance moves like before. Has only one punch dialogue. None of his actions are like the traditional mass movies but the whistles and cheers don't stop. Shows you what an ACTOR he has become . He is literally Marana mass without doing anything mass (13/n)
Another huge positive is Anirudh. His songs were chart busters even though the movie was delayed a year. Background score is absolutely amazing. Vera level man nee! (14/n)
We had directors like Goutham Menon who reinvented the song genre by making them a part of the movie but still having visuals for the song as well. In Master, the songs are part of the story and what's happening. It helps with the screenplay and keeps your attention (15/n)
Coming to the cast, almost everyone has a mass scene as said before. Gouri, Andrea, malavika all have surprising high moments. Even poovaiyar and the director have and it's very well done 👍🏽 (16/n)
Lokesh does everything you expect in a mass movie but differently.
People will make fun during emotional scenes. They'll make fun even if someone tells karuthu.Children are An important part of most Vijay movies but here they are packaged very differently & form the core (17/n)
The films biggest win is the pre interval and interval scene. It builds so naturally that you will be hooked and then bang! It explodes into a mass scene that will have you shouting and screaming (18/n
Positives - 1st half, vijay, VJS, Anirudh, poovaiyar, Andrea, gouri, story

Negatives - Some scenes in 2nd half could have been kept as more mass to build up the movie.
Malavika - No expression

Surprising positives - Mahendran (1st 15 mins), pre interval and interval. (19/n)
Coming to the negatives, I can understand that. The 2nd half was very experimental. There was a scene that looked straight out of soodhu kavvum with its quirky humor in between the action. The action sequence before climax was good and surprising (20/n)b
But could have been staged better. The kabbadi scene was maybe one scene where Lokesh could have taken liberty and made it even more Mass. I think that was an opportunity lost. Another reason why people got disappointed was that there are many points in the movie (21/n)
Where Vijay could have unleashed beast mode but that is where Lokesh comes again. It's a character driven performance & what Vijay does is not what is expected but still manages to bring applause. This is the BIGGEST RISK VIJAY HAS Taken. Some people have not been satisfied (22/n)
BUT the biggest thing is that it was ACCEPTED by the majority. This is the biggest plus for the movie because it means more off beat roles for Vijay in commercially successful ventures (23/n)
Lokesh's intelligence is shown in many Kutty kadhais in master . the gaps in between are filled with subjects such as politics, love, male chauvinism and female empowerment which are told in short yet sweet ways. There is a lot of symbolism as well. (24/n)
In the end, this master is a movie for all. Even the climax which many are putting as cringe will make sense when you watch the movie because the story is the most important hero. Lokesh is the future and should work on an out an out movie with vijay again. (25/n)
For me this movie will be unforgettable for the pre interval and interval for the fact that this is Vijay's most off beat performance since 1997. The pona pogattum song is very well placed. Even more than thanoothu village. (26/n)
If you like Vijay, you'll love it. If you don't like him also, you'll find a lot of quirky humor, VJS and music to like. If you are one of those people who claim has world cinema knowledge, there's a ton of subtle references and symbolism in the movie (27/n)
Verdict - Vijay takes on his riskiest big project and pulls it off into a commercially successful movie. Vijay sethupathi is another level. From the bottom in his 50th film, he know rules in his 64th movie with this most off beat role.

The Vaathi is now king. (28/28)
