Those signs of toxic trouble in a culture? #1 People don't speak up for fear of reprisal and retribution 2/22
Bad behavior is ignored, explained or defended. 3/22
Intimidation becomes the accepted norm. 4/22
Problem solvers and other good employees leave or, more accurately, flee. 5/22
Culture becomes whatever people say it is. 6/22
Cutting communications become commonplace 7/22
Blistering emails fly 8/22
Employee humiliation is accepted 9/22
Processes and policies are ignored in place of anything it takes to get something done. 10/22
Constructive criticism disappears. Taking people down takes its place. 11/22
The "walking dead" roam the hallways. People who have become faceless, lifeless, opinionless people who are simply trying to survive 12/22
Those affected by policies are the last to hear about them. 13/22
Control replaces management. 14/22
Employee feedback is ignored or shunned. 15/22
Gossip trumps all other communication. No one believes official statements anymore. 16/22
Management pits employees against each other. 17/22
Turf wars and power plays become all that really matters internally. 18/22
Secrecy becomes a superpower. Isolating people from what they need to do to be productive becomes a weapon. 19/22
Ethics are seen as a roadblock to getting things done. 20/22
Sleeplessness, ulcers, high blood pressure and drinking become common. People literally become sick of their jobs. 21/22
The poison from too many people in power--left, right, and everywhere in between--hurts all of us. Let's clean up our system, live out our values, and hold everyone we deal with to the same standards we say we live by. My book is The Arsonist in the Office. 22/22
