Israel is now entering to the more challenging phase of our vaccination program.

A short thread!
Challange #1: Inclusion!
The graph here by @calcalist breaks the vaccination rate for 60+ (red) and 17+ (black) based on their socioeconomic (s.e.) strata (numbers on the left; 1: lowest). Not surprising, high socioeconomic status is associated with higher vaccination rate. Why?
Vaccination is free and we don't really have rural poor here as in the US. But for various reasons ultra-orthodox Jews and the Arab minorities display higher rates of vaccination hesitancy. These populations are typically on the lower end of the s.e. strata.

And in general, the
more wealthy you are, the easier for you to take time off from work, kids, etc and get your vaccine.

Finally, people with disabilities have issues accessing the vaccine centers. These people usually fall in the lower s.e. status.
In other words, the quick roll disproportionately tapped into the "low hanging fruits": more wealthy, educated, early adopter style. We will not be able to continue at the same speed without being more inclusive and work through vaccine hesitancy in certain communities.
Challange 2: second dose!
This week is the third week of the vaccine operation. So vaccination centers should deal with both administering first and second doses. It definitely creates more strain on the system that can slow down the roll out.
One interesting question is the second dose adherence. People are aware that 2nd dose = more severe side effects. I wonder what would be the 2nd dose rate? Probably will magnify the biases. Poor people cannot afford a sick day off. Gov can help by absorbing the costs of such day.
Challenge 3: Young population!
Israel population is young with ~35% are <17y.o. These people cannot get the vaccine. So the upper bound on the is only 65%. If 15% of adults don't want/can't get a vaccine, we will plateau at 50% max. We are already half way there. But that means
that it will become harder and harder to keep at the same pace. Next few weeks will be very interesting to see!
