New: A Las Vegas hospital issued a disaster declaration over the weekend after a surge in patients put its intensive care unit at 137 percent occupancy.
We only know bc @MaryHynes1 got a tip. Short thread on transparency (1/x) https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-las-vegas/covid-19-wave-prompts-las-vegas-hospital-to-issue-disaster-alert-2251426/

As I've ranted before, Nevada is a state that is closely guarding how bad occupancy rates are at specific hospitals/ICUs.
The Nevada Hospital Association considers this private information (why?), and has worked to keep it out of our hands. https://www.reviewjournal.com/investigations/nevada-hospital-reports-kept-secret-amid-coronavirus-spread-2019847/

Instead, the NHA only provides the public with county-wide information about hospital capacity.
As @MaryHynes1 reported today, and I've reported recently, that can actually disguise how overwhelmed certain hospitals are. (3/x) https://www.reviewjournal.com/investigations/staff-shortages-lack-of-beds-bring-hospitals-closer-to-breaking-point-2224818/

For story in my last tweet, I was able to obtain hospital-specific data by making the Nevada equivalent of a FOIA to our governor's office.
This worked, but the data was several days old by the time I got it. I was at the mercy of how quickly the gov would fulfill it. (4/x)

Last week, I requested the same data.
This time however, I wasn't given it. I wasn't issued a denial, but told I got all responsive records and they weren't included.
This indicates gov's office is no longer receiving it from NHA. (I've asked twice for clarification) (5/x)

So, effectively, the public's access to this hospital-specific data has been severed.
We're in the worst part of this pandemic that Southern Nevada has seen. A local hospital just hit 137% ICU occupancy!
And it seems the primary focus is keeping this info out of sight.

That's my rant.
I'll never not be annoyed at Nevada's actions to hide painful truths during this pandemic while our officials promise transparency.
I'll leave you with another example. (7/7) https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-nevada/nevada-stops-covid-exposure-reports-for-workplaces-hotel-casinos-2146528/
