If we are in a lockdown (or whichever “ambiguous” language we are using today), we are in a public health CRISIS. If we are in a CRISIS then the daily business of our country should not be business as usual.
That means, we should be focusing on the tasks that protect health, redirecting all available resources to that end, and prioritizing health behaviours.
My area is the health of children. Children’s health at this time depends on their families focusing on their health. This means parents shouldn’t be forced to juggle at-home non-essential work while also attending to their children’s needs.
This means families should be focusing on accessing the OUTDOORS (arguably, outdoor play is among the most important tools for children’s health, after education and vaccination). So don’t shut down the outdoors. Shut down non-essential indoors.
So, for example: #NHL startup - not an essential health-focused activity. It takes resources (even privately funded ones - this is how the rich get richer while the poor pay the price) from those who need it. Shut it down for now. Non-essential government work - pause for now.
Let’s focus our efforts, people. Think about the needs of the vulnerable - the kids, the elders, the marginalized who bear the brunt of this crisis, and pause the rest.
