We are alarmed at the Govt’s decision to fragment its approach to gender-based violence (GBV), by creating 2 separate strategies for Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) and Domestic Abuse (DA).
The decision was made w/o prior consultation w/VAWG sector experts or survivors & sets a dangerous precedent for decision-making. Our concerns have been repeatedly raised w/Govt, but they have been disregarded.
For decades, many of us have worked towards creating a single, integrated, rights-based framework to address GBV; intersectional in approach, inclusive & founded on principles of non-discrimination, gender equality & human rights.
Whilst there clearly remains much work to be done to improve the content & implementation of the Govt’s VAWG strategy, our fear is that this unfinished work will now suffer a serious & significant set-back, with harmful consequences for survivors.
Please support our call on Govt to reverse its decision. Please sign our statement which is on our website together with further information about the Govt’s intentions and our concerns about the dual strategy. https://southallblacksisters.org.uk/news/sbs-and-womens-organisations-alarmed-by-government-dual-strategy-vawg/
