Here's JB's scouting card. Former Rover Eric Kinder, now at Carlisle United, insists that Branthwaite is a right-footed player, but we've seen him use his left just as often.

At 6ft 5", Branthwaite has a clear physical presence on the pitch. Much like Tosin Adarabioyo in 2019/20, #Rovers would be getting a centre-back with decent feet for his height.
Let's compare. Darragh Lenihan obviously comes out on top across the board here, but if we look at some of the linked players on loan, you can see the difference between the three.

Of our current defenders, Branthwaite reminds me more of Scott Wharton. His time with Carlisle definitely shows, and his height gives him an advantage at the back. He'll be very helpful in games up against physical strikers. #BRFC #Rovers
Let's look in the air to start with. Whilst I think JB could probably win even more aerial duels with his height, he certainly possesses enough ability there to be competent at Championship level. #BRFC #Rovers
From a possession stand-point, JB is conservative. Looks to play short but definitely has a good touch. Usually receives & moves the ball on within two touches.

Interceptions & defensive positioning is definitely a part of JB's game that I like. Similarly to Scott Wharton I think the mental side of his game for a young player is fairly impressive. Seems to be in the right place at the right time most of the time. #BRFC #Rovers
From a tackling standpoint, JB's height definitely makes sliding challenges a little awkward. A few clips of some tackling abilities here. First one stopping Adama Traore is quite a nice watch! #BRFC #Rovers
